Malawi has joined a number of African states in Johannesburg, South Africa, to review and amend the Kampala Amendments on the crime against aggression.
The conference, running from today to tomorrow and organised by Africa Legal Aid (AFLA), aims to mobilize African states parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to raise awareness and generate ownership.
Minister of Justice Honourable Titus Mvalo and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mr. Masauko Chamkakala are representing the Malawi Government.
The Kampala Amendments refer to changes made to the Rome Statute of the ICC during the Review Conference held in Kampala, Uganda, in June 2010.
These amendments primarily focus on the crime of aggression and war crimes and they defined and established a procedure for the ICC to exercise jurisdiction over the crime of aggression.
The amendments, which expanded the list of war crimes to include the use of certain prohibited weapons in non-international conflicts, came into effect on July 17, 2018, marking a significant step in international criminal law.
High profile officials taking various roles at the conference include South Africa Minister of Justice Honourable Thembi Simelane, Botswana High Commissioner to South Africa Judge Sanji Monageng and African Union Special Envoy for Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities His Excellency Adama Dieng.
Since its inception in 1995, AFLA, based in South Africa, has consistently worked to promote human rights and international justice in Africa.
