Minister Addresses Concerns on Voters' Roll

The Honourable Minister of Justice, Titus Mvalo, addressed concerns raised in Parliament yesterday in Lilongwe regarding the Malawi Electoral Commission's (MEC) voters' roll clean-up. He dismissed the opposition's worries about missing names from the voters' roll, stating that these concerns were premature, as the voter verification process had not yet commenced.

The Minister highlighted that the current system was approved by Parliament through the Electoral Bill. He further noted that similar concerns had been raised in the past during election periods when the opposition Democratic Progressive Party was in power.

The media has been reporting on the MEC voters' roll clean-up, spotlighting allegations of missing voter data and potential manipulation of the voters' register. Opposition parties have called for independent audits to ensure transparency and accountability.

In response earlier, the electoral body has acknowledged the concerns and reiterated its commitment to transparency and fairness. It emphasised that the clean-up process is part of its efforts to deliver an accurate and credible voters' register ahead of the September 16 General Elections.
