Area 18 Residents Compesated for Contaminated Water

Residents of Area 18 in Lilongwe, 325 in total, who consumed water contaminated with fecal matter in July 2017, have finally been compensated with a total K1.365 billion.

Each resident is set to receive K4.2 million, bringing the total amount to K1,365,000,000.

The claimants expressed their gratitude to the Minister of Justice, Honourable Titus Mvalo, for diligently following the President's directive to ensure they were compensated.

This announcement was made today at Capital Hill during a meeting called by the Minister to update the residents on the progress made so far.

The Minister briefed them on several meetings he had with the Chief Executive Officers of Lilongwe City Council, Malawi Housing Corporation, and Lilongwe Water Board, who were responsible for addressing the issue.

Mvalo stated that all the institutions involved have agreed to compensate the affected residents, but the payments will be made in installments.

"Next week we are having a final meeting where payment modalities will be discussed and agreed upon," said the Minister.

Speaking on behalf of the six representatives who met with the Minister, Chairperson of the Committee Leonard Phiri thanked the Minister for his dedication in ensuring that the President's directive was fulfilled.

"Our issue has dragged on for far too long, but we are happy that the President has heard our cries and acted on it," said Phiri.
