Government Calls for Everyday Human Rights at Commemoration

The Second Vice President Enock Chihana today led the nation in Nkhata Bay District in commemorating International Human Rights Day under the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials.”

Delegated by His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika, Chihana emphasised that human rights must be lived daily, not only written in law.

Marking the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN’s 80th year, Chihana urged Malawians to reflect on progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

He highlighted Malawi’s obligations under international treaties and praised constitutional institutions such as the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), who were the organisers of the event, the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Legal Aid Bureau for advancing justice and equality.

The MHRC’s A‑status accreditation was described as a source of national pride, though the Vice President acknowledged its financial constraints.

Chihana outlined seven government priorities: strengthening health services, expanding access to justice, protecting children, promoting inclusion of persons with disabilities, advancing economic and social rights, ending gender‑based violence, and reinforcing transparency and accountability.

"Corruption, discrimination, and violence undermine dignity. Human rights must translate into safe water, respectful healthcare, inclusive schools, and fair courts," he said.

The Second Vice President commended development partners including UNDP, EU, Iceland, and Norway, represented by their heads at the event, for supporting Malawi’s human rights agenda.
