President Lazarus Chakwera today presided over a prestigious ceremony at the New State House in Lilongwe, where he conferred the title of Senior Counsel (SC) on 13 distinguished legal practitioners. The appointments were made upon the recommendation of the Honours Committee of the Malawi Law Society.
Those conferred this SC designation are Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice Allison M’bang’ombe, Attorney General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda, Marshal Chilenga, Pempho Likongwe, Emily Makuta, Kamudoni Nyasulu, Maziko Sauti Phiri, Innocentia Ottober, Ralph Mhone and James Masumbu.
In addition, the late Garton Kainja and Alex Nampota were posthumously awarded the SC title in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the legal profession.
President Chakwera, offering his counsel after the conferment, urged the new SC in town to preserve loyalty, integrity and ability where they have to undertake their professional work without cutting corners and never taking short cuts.
“If we continue to be a nation where we each excuse ourselves to cut corners or a nation in which we do not hold others around us accountable for cutting corners, then there is no amount of money, power, and prayer that is going to develop our nation.
“So the integrity I have seen in you is this dedication to standards and this demand of all others around you to meet the same standards. In short, a person of integrity does not measure themselves by their education, or wealth, or popularity, but by the quality of results they produce and the quality of effort they put in to produce it,” the President advised.
