Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Charles Mhango has reiterated Government’s dedication to ensuring access to justice and upholding the rule of law as essential pillars of democracy, social cohesion, and economic development.
Speaking today at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, the Minister hosted officials from the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau alongside a delegation from the Kingdom of Eswatini’s Legal Aid.
The meeting focused on sharing experiences and best practices in establishing, institutionalising, and delivering legal aid services. Mhango stressed that access to justice should be viewed not as a luxury but as a necessity for maintaining peace and social order.
“Access to justice is basically the engine oil for democracy, economic transformation, and social transactions in a society,” he said, warning that the absence of a proper legal framework can create anarchy and chaos.
He underscored the institutional independence of the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau, noting that while the Bureau operates as a stand‑alone entity, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs remains its responsible line ministry.
Malawi Legal Aid Bureau Director Chimwemwe Chithope Mwale echoed Mhango’s sentiments, likening the Bureau to “a child who has simply left its parents’ home” but still needs guidance and support.
Mwale commended the Ministry for continued assistance, citing additional financial resources secured this year that enabled the Bureau to procure vehicles to strengthen operations.
Eswatini Senior Legal Aid Officer Ms. Gabsile Ntuli praised Malawi for establishing and institutionalising the Bureau, describing its frameworks and service delivery model as exemplary. She further lauded Mhango’s compassion and commitment to addressing the legal needs of vulnerable groups.
“We congratulate the Government of Malawi for having an Honourable Minister with such commitment, one who ensures that the people of Malawi not only live and survive, but also have a leader determined to address their legal needs from the heart,” Ntuli said.
